The Suffolk County Radio Club’s 2026 Winter Field Day was a tremendous success, bringing together over 40 members for a full day of hands-on training, teamwork, and real-world high frequency (HF) communications. Despite the winter conditions, operators of all experience levels gathered to set up stations, test equipment, and practice operating under field-style conditions that simulate emergency communications scenarios.
Throughout the event, members worked across multiple HF bands, making more than 200 contacts with amateur radio operators around the world. These worldwide connections showcased the power of amateur radio to bridge distances and maintain communication even when traditional systems may fail. Newer members had the opportunity to learn directly from experienced operators, strengthening technical skills in antenna setup, signal propagation, logging, and efficient operating techniques.
A highlight of the day was the visit from Suffolk County Executive Ed Romain and Legislator Mazzarella, who took time to meet with club members and observe operations firsthand. Club leadership explained how amateur radio operators play a vital role during emergency situations, providing reliable communication support during storms, power outages, and community incidents. Their visit helped reinforce the importance of preparedness and public service within the amateur radio community.
Most importantly, the event fostered camaraderie, learning, and enthusiasm for the hobby. Members and visitors alike left with new knowledge, new contacts, and a deeper appreciation for the role amateur radio plays in both everyday communication and emergency response. Suffolk County Radio Club’s Winter Field Day once again proved to be an outstanding experience for all involved.
