The Suffolk County Radio Club was once again honored to be in attendance with Elaine Thompson, daughter of Frank John Ryder, the original W2DQ! Unfortunately most memorabilia from the time when Frank lived in Brooklyn had been lost in a fire. However Elaine was gracious enough to bring copies of 2 photographs that survived the fire. The first was a picture of Frank John Ryder.
The second was a picture of Frank’s ham shack in his Brooklyn home.
Elaine did not know it but the members of the SCRC had a surprise for her as well. Elaine was presented with a Certificate honoring her father, Frank John Ryder, as the 1st person to ever be assigned the W2DQ call sign, which is the current call sign of the SCRC club. Frank John Ryder was also a founding member of the Suffolk County Radio Club.
Thank you Elaine for sharing stories and photos of her father with us. There is another surprise in store for Elaine next month. We hope to continue to have a long lasting relationship with Elaine and to see here at future meetings and events.
