Suffolk County Radio Club Brings ARRL Field Day to the
Historic Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe
Yaphank & Shoreham, NY — The Suffolk County Radio Club of Long Island invites the public to experience the excitement of amateur radio during the 2026 ARRL Field Day, taking place Saturday and Sunday, June 27th and 28th, on the historic grounds of the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe, the former laboratory of inventor Nikola Tesla.
Public hours are Saturday, June 27th, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., offering visitors a rare chance to combine a day of hands-on radio communications with a visit to one of Long Island’s scientific landmarks.
ARRL Field Day is the largest amateur radio event in North America, held every year on the fourth full weekend of June. Across the United States and Canada, tens of thousands of operators set up temporary stations in parks, fields, and public spaces to demonstrate that amateur radio can establish reliable communications anywhere, under any conditions, and without commercial power or infrastructure — a capability that proves vital during emergencies and natural disasters.
This year, the Suffolk County Radio Club will be joined by the Brookhaven Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) group, whose volunteers provide critical backup communications for served agencies when normal systems fail. Together, the two groups will operate a three-station setup designed to make contacts across the country and around the world throughout the 24-hour event.
A highlight for visitors will be the Get On The Air (GOTA) station, an open, welcoming environment where anyone can sit down, key the microphone, and make a real contact with another operator — no amateur radio license required. Whether you are simply curious, considering earning your own license, or bringing along children to spark an interest in science and technology, club members will be on hand to guide you every step of the way.
“There is something truly special about operating radios on the very ground where Nikola Tesla dreamed of wireless communication for the entire world,” said a club spokesperson. “Field Day lets us honor that legacy while showing the public how amateur radio continues to serve our communities today.”
Attendees can watch operators work the airwaves, learn about radio technology and emergency preparedness, ask questions, and explore the Tesla Science Center grounds — all in one memorable afternoon. The event is free and family-friendly.
